i’m currently not reading any leisure book but my bio textbook😭
however, the last leisure book I read (about a month ago) was Transcendent kingdom by Yaa Gyasi, took me a while to finish though but it was such a beautiful and well written novel.
It speaks around themes of mental health and illness and the tension between religion and scientific research (faith vs. depression for instance).
As someone pretty much involved in mental wellness advocacy, I enjoyed the vulnerability of her writing and can attest to the fact that so much of our culturally shaped mindset needs to be shifted around mental health conversations especially in African countries like Ghana. It’s not just African countries though, I think the stigmatization towards mental health is really found surprisingly in countries that have collective societies.
I’m currently reading Some Prefer Nettles by Tanizaki’s Jun'ichirō. The novel follows Kaname, a man caught up in an unhappy marriage and how he drifts between the appeal of Western influences (pro- divorce) and the weight of old Japanese traditions (anti- divorce).
