I wonder what the government attack on open-source/open-weight is going to look like…
It is remarkably sad that likely the only reason total control is not already being chased harder is because the Chinese committed early to open weights, rather than trying to force AI into the shape of a corporate utility that the masses must buy.
We are in an interesting postion where AI labs have scraped the public commons for information, and are now trying to sell it back to the public, whilst Chinese models are scraping US model output to return the information back at a much lower rate, whilst also actually providing the weights for users to run themselves; putting the information back into the public commons (like the data which trained the tech in the first place), and back under the control of the user, not locked inside a corporate building.
