Honduras has recorded a total of 141 cases of screwworm in humans so far in 2026, with two confirmed deaths, and 4,656 in animals, with a higher incidence in cattle, official sources reported this Monday.

According to the latest epidemiological report, which EFE had access to, the two fatalities correspond to elderly adults who presented complications derived from infection by the larvae of the Cochliomyia hominivorax fly.

Both cases originated from the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, which has alerted health authorities to the presence of the parasite in urban areas of the Central District, according to the report from the Ministry of Health.
