most of the criticism I’ve heard in this vein has been from women who’ve escaped high control religions themselves, and I think it’s pretty telling that the readers who have no experience with the subject matter are the ones most sensitive to the criticism that the author didn’t take enough care with it. I feel like if it were any other knowledge domain, we’d like… take that experience into consideration instead of sneering at it
Sociologically, there is something so interesting about the fury re: lack of religious specificity in Yesteryear. People want a book that reflects either the lived experiences of Mormons, Evangelicals, Quiverfuls, Baptists, and Catholics, or for it to be a deeply researched screed with Bible verses woven into the text.
