Parental rights are fundamental. But they are not the same as control.

In this piece, I reflect on how my own childhood, my relationship with my mother, and becoming a parent shaped my understanding of what it truly means to protect a child. I also share how these experiences informed my research on the middle ground between parental protection and teen autonomy that recently received the USEC 2026 Test of Time Award.
