The Mahmudiyah massacre on March 12th, 2006 involved the rape and murder of 14‑year‑old Abeer Qassim Hamza al‑Janabi and the killing of her parents and six‑year‑old sister by five U.S. soldiers.

Abeer, her mother Fakhriyah (34), her father Qassim (45), and her sister Hadeel (6) were targeted after four soldiers left their checkpoint and entered the family’s home.

According to court records, Steven D. Green shot Abeer's parents and younger sister first, then took part in the assault on Abeer alongside Paul Cortez and James Barker. Green then killed her with a gunshot to the head.

Green was later convicted in U.S. federal court.
