The centring of tropes is one aspect of the wider phenomenon I call metadatafication: the deadening emphasis on aboutness, and the compulsion to relate things (in order to be “relevant”) to a set of currently trending topics and tags.
Do any other authors feel a strange claustrophobia that’s come from an emphasis on “tropes” in promoting books? I love that so many people are buying and reading and loving books, but there’s a disquieting sense on the creation side that readers and publishers are only looking to engage with stories when they know exactly what to expect.…
