“Kindness to self is the foundation of kindness to others.”
I knew someone who treated everyone with warmth except herself. She forgave others’ mistakes instantly, offered comfort freely, yet spoke to herself with criticism that would wound anyone else. One day she caught herself mid-sentence and stopped. She placed a hand on her chest and said, “I’m allowed to be kind to me too.” The words felt strange at first. Over time, they became natural. Her kindness to others deepened because it now flowed from a fuller well.
Kindness to self is not indulgence. It is the root system that sustains all other kindness. When we speak gently to ourselves, we create a model for how we speak to the world.
Today, practice kindness to self.
Notice one moment of self-criticism or harshness today.
Pause and reframe it with gentleness: replace “I should have” with “I am learning.”
Place a hand on your heart and offer one kind phrase aloud or inwardly.
Feel the warmth spread.
Repeat as needed, treating yourself as you would a dear friend.
At day's end, acknowledge the kindness: “I was gentle with myself today.”
In kindness to self, we do not become selfish. We become more capable of genuine love for others.
