I have a pet peeve that is annoying me a LOT here on Substack, and that is the bait-and-switch some people do by posting their pieces and one reads halfway through, THEN gets the message that in order to continue reading, one has to pay for a subscription! I find this infuriating!. Like: why not announce this at the beginning??!! I much prefer Annie Lamott’s practice of giving everyone the same content, but if you want to comment, then you need to pay for a subscription. Probably because she’d be answering comments full time if everyone were to comment. So rest assured: if I come across a piece that I’ve read halfway only to get the message that to continue I need to pay for a subscription, I will NEVER subscribe, paid or free. So there.
