Martin Buber’s I-It and I-Thou completely blows up the AI consciousness debate. Instead of asking is AI Conscious? we should be asking whether or not AI is capable of an I-Thou relationship. AI may be a very sophisticated I-It interaction, but will never have the characteristics of an I-Thou relationship. We can only approach and study AI as an it, not as a thou.
