It’s crazy that this is even controversial. Lane is absolutely correct.
Yes, I’m sure you met a well-trained pit bull once. And I’m sure you’ve been frightened by a big German dog more than once. But they are two different things. The stats are clear. Pit Bulls and pit crosses are ten (10) times more likely to be involved in a fatal dog attack than the second place breed (Rottweilers). Not ten times more likely than all other breeds; ten times more likely than the second most aggressive breed.
The reason is simple. All the other “dangerous” breeds – Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, Malinois, etc. – are guard breeds. Their aggression is oriented toward protection, which is why the same dog that will savagely drive away a stranger will let the three-year-old pull its ears and climb on its back. But Pit Bulls are bred for dogfighting – that’s what the “pit” in the name refers to. It was a moral crime to develop the breed in the first place, and now matter how sweet you think that one dog is, the existence of the breed is an unmitigated danger to every other living creature.
