Effa Manley, co-owner of the Brooklyn and Newark Eagles, was born on this date in 1897. The Eagles had a .530 winning percentage and won the 1946 Negro Leagues World Series during Manley’s ownership. A strong advocate for owners of Negro Leagues teams to be compensated when their players signed with major league teams, she became the only woman elected to the Hall of Fame in 2006.
