Phil Niekro, knuckleball pitcher mostly for the Atlanta Braves, was born on this date in 1939. A five-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, he led the league once each in wins, ERA, and strikeouts. Niekro won 318 career games and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997.
