Tris Speaker, outfielder mostly for the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians, was born on this date in 1888. An 18-time .300 hitter, he was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1912, batted .345 for his career, and hit 792 doubles, the most ever. Speaker was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937.
