Charlie Gehringer, second baseman for the Detroit Tigers, was born on this date in 1903. A six-time All-Star, he led the league in hits, runs, and doubles twice each, won a batting title and was American League Most Valuable Player in 1937. Gehringer was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1949.
