I read some opinion recently that while it is common wisdom that we need to teach more “critical thinking” in schools, actually the problem is we don’t even make students learn and memorize basic knowledge, which is a foundational underpinning for critical thinking. This essay made me think of that, especially with the inability for these college students to understand metaphor. And if you can’t understand metaphor, how can you go on to teach even younger students how to read?
