Today, I asked one of my students why he thinks Mrs. Phelps cries in response to reading Dover Beach in Fahrenheit 451. The student informed me that she’s crying because the poem is sad.
This is the result of a literary education system that has completely divorced itself from critical thinking—and from associating literature with Beauty.
