I'M ALWAYS INTERESTED in people who choose, very deliberately, to live quite differently from the societal norm. They epitomize, in a way, the theme of this Substack—Play Makes Us Human. They have chosen to maximizes their control over their own life, their own way of finding enjoyment and meaning. Each such story is unique, not something to be mimicked, but something that can inspire one’s own thinking about how one wants to live. I was delighted, therefore, to read a prepublication draft of Blake Boles’s new book, Dirtbag Rich, about the life he has chosen. After reading it, I invited him to write a précis of it for Play Makes Us Human, and here it is.
