In the context of deity yoga, this vision of ourselves as sublime isn’t a delusion to be dismantled, it’s a deliberate reconstruction. Vajrayana doesn’t seek to eliminate the placeholder self but to replace it skillfully, using gesture, speech, form, and felt presence. Our foreground identity, the momentarily dominant construction, is hallucinatory, sustained by unconscious repetition. Deity practice introduces a new hallucination: conscious, deliberate, and infused with precision.
