But if you’re a Catholic priest who wants to make a political point, you don’t need to worry about procedures. You organize a Eucharistic procession to the ICE detention center— on a day when the relevant authorities aren’t even on duty— and demand to be admitted. You won’t get in, so you won’t be able to administer the sacraments. But since your purpose was political, that doesn’t matter so much.

Two years ago, when other American bishops were organizing Eucharistic processions through the streets of their cities, Chicago’s Cardinal Cupich discouraged the practice, saying that the focus on the Eucharist could produce “narrowness, and even distorted perceptions of the Sacrament.” But don’t hold your breath waiting for him to condemn this exploitation of the Sacrament for a political stunt.
