Amy Welborn asks a familiar question, and adds a few twists.

And given that there is, indeed, no uniformity in the celebration of the post-Vatican II liturgy… why is the TLM the only impermissible mode of liturgical expression?

• Since Vatican II we’ve been regularly urged to find unity in diversity. But not in liturgical matters?

• Traditiones Custodes was, like the liturgical changes after Vat II, abrupt and distressing to many of the faithful. TC was, moreover, an 180° reversal of the call for 'mutual enrichment’ that had been issued just a few years earlier—thus a rebuke to faithful Catholics who had been doing what the Vatican encouraged them to do.

• So if there’s a danger to Church unity— and there is— the danger comes not from celebration of the TLM, but from the draconian enforcement of TC.
