On the eve of a consistory at which the cardinals will discuss the sacred liturgy, Diane Montagna reports that a respected French cleric has proposed the creation of a new canonical structure for Traditionalists.

Here’s the problem: The proposal (as I understand it) would ease the immediate concerns of Traditionalists, insofar as it would ensure continued access to the TLM. But it would not address the need for what Pope Benedict XVI wanted: the ‘mutual enrichment’ that could occur if the TLM were available in ordinary parish settings, as envisioned in Summorum Pontificum.

In other words this proposal could establish little oases of tradition, while leaving the vast majority of Catholics still wandering in the liturgical desert.
