We’re about to be hit with a big snowstorm. You know that already, of course; the headlines have been blaring all week. But it occurred to me that just a few generations ago, people wouldn’t have known it was coming. A few people always claimed to have a sense for the future weather. I don’t know— I wasn’t around— but I bet they were often wrong. Anyway that’s not my point. Bear with me.
There’s a little opossum who lives somewhere on our property, and sometimes sneaks into our garage at night to stay warm. We don’t mind. He’s a gentle critter, so ugly he’s cute, and come the summer he’ll be eating ticks at a prodigious rate. Usually he stays out of sight, especially during the day. But yesterday I saw him more than once, nosing around in the snow, obviously looking for food. That’s when it struck me: He knows the cold and snow are coming!
The animals always know more than we do about what Mother Nature is doing, don’t they? As a race, we’re not very bright.
