A Brazilian archbishop has taken the implementation of Traditionis Custodes to a shocking new extreme.
Archbishop Carlos Breis Pereira of Maceio announced that anyone who celebrates the Traditional Latin Mass— outside of the single time and place that he has authorized— will be declared guilty of schism and excommunicated.
Two questions arise:
Is there any other offense for which the archbishop has threatened excommunication? Any “refusal to submit to the Supreme Pontiff” (see canon 751) that he regards as equally serious? Or is the celebration of the ancient Catholic liturgy the unforgivable sin?
Before the release of Traditionis Custodes, while serving as bishop of Juazeiro, was equally aggressive in enforcing Summorum Pontificum, then still in force, which granted every priest the right to celebrate the traditional liturgy? Or do he refuse to submit to that directive from that Supreme Pontiff?
