Among the hundreds of explanations of what “synodality” means, perhaps the most imaginative is supplied by Cardinal Cupich, in a piece featured in L’Osservatore Romano. “Synodality is the Church learning to dance,” he tells us.

You don’t understand? There’s more:

“It is the constant practice of listening to the divine melody, honoring each participant’s unique steps, and moving forward in a beautifully coordinated witness to the world.”

You still don’t understand? This might help:

“Synodality requires a willingness to step onto the dance floor without a rigid, predetermined outcome. In fact, it is inherently a journey into uncharted territory.”

Perfectly clear now?
