My guess is that Lyman Stone, the author of this New York Times piece, did not choose the headline:
The Population Bust Is Coming Sooner Than Anyone Is Prepared For
Not everyone is unprepared. Stone, the director of the Pronatalism Initiative for the Institute for Family Studies, has seen the birth dearth coming. Actually a number of us have been warning that as the population implodes, so does the Social Security system and the housing market and.. as the NYT piece puts it: “It is a forecast so grim it could upend American budgeting and, thus, American politics.”
You think immigration could supply the workers to fill the gap? Not in the long run: “The supply of would-be migrants will shrink as more countries run out of young people, and the skilled ones every aging country covets will be fought over.”
This isn’t a “what-if” scenario; it’s coming at us, ready or not. Stone’s grim conclusion:
The question for our country’s 250th birthday is how many more birthdays we want it to have, both for its babies and as a country.
