Andy Burnham, the new prime minister of the UK, identifies himself a Catholic, but admits that he’s “not a Catholic in that full sense of the word.” By which he means that he doesn’t attend Mass, doesn’t accept the teachings of the Church, but “it all comes back to cultural identity.” In fact he readily acknowledges that his loyalty to his favorite soccer club (Everton, if you were wondering) comes before his loyalty to the Catholic Church.
Presumably Burnham wouldn’t mind being identified as a “cultural” Catholic, then. Yet oddly, the views of this “cultural” Catholic on abortion match closely with those of “devout” Catholics like Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi.
If you can explain this fact while keeping a straight face, you may have a future in the mainstream media.
