One of these things is not like the others.
On July 2, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo had appointed Father Stephen Wang to be Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, England. His ordination is scheduled for October 19.
On July 3, Father Stuart Hall was named bishop of the Australian military ordinariate, with his ordination set for August 29.
On July 6, Father Ramiro Landaverder Oreliana was named Bishop of Zacatelcoluca, El Salvador, with his ordination set for August 15.
On July 9, Father Juan Morante Buchhammer, SJ, was named apostolic vicar of Jaén, Peru, to be ordained on August 30.
On July 11, Father Vincent Mpwaji was named auxiliary bishop of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; his ordination date has not been announced.
On July 13, Father Diego Rendón Urrea was named Bishop of Jerico, Colombia, to be ordained on August 25.
On July 16, Father Bonaventure Gubazire was named Bishop of Kabale, Uganda, with no ordination date yet announced.
On July 16, Father Jean Miguina, OFM Cap, was named Bishop of Sarh, Chad, to be ordained on October 17.
You see the pattern, right? First the appointment of a new bishop is announced by the Vatican; then his episcopal ordination is scheduled, usually taking place several weeks later.
But…
On July 22, the Vatican announced that Father Joseph Chang Yanfeng had been ordained on that day as Bishop of Chifeng, China. The Pope had made the appointment on July 15, according to the Vatican release. But it had not previously been announced.
First the bishop’s ordination, then the announcement of his appointment, with the Pope, the Vatican tells us, “having approved his candidature within the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China.” That sequence of events does nothing to dispel suspicions that it is the Communist regime, not the Holy See, that controls the process of finding new bishops for Chinese dioceses.
