Ines Angeli Murzaku, writing in Catholic World Report, sees how a subtle change in the Fundamental Law of the Vatican City-State could advance ecumenical dialogue between the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

It does not resolve papal infallibility. It does not answer the Filioque. It does not undo centuries of division. But it does remove one unnecessary ecumenical obstacle: the impression that the pope’s temporal sovereignty over Vatican City State is theologically identical with the Petrine office.

The change, she writes, reflects the thought of St. Augustine. It shows Pope Leo applying his Augustinian approach to the ecumenical strategy of Pope John Paul II.
