An atom is mostly empty space. But you can't push your hand through a table.
The "empty" part isn't empty. It's an electron's probability cloud, and clouds don't compress. When your hand approaches wood, electrons in your skin repel electrons in the table, and neither side gives.
You've never touched anything in your life. You've only ever been close enough for the repulsion to feel like contact.
