Funny you bring that up. Generally speaking I use "Carnival" when discussing The Tradition in general, or specific celebrations in English speaking locations.
But if the subject is Italy, i'll use "Il Carnevale" Germany has both "Karneval" and "Fastnacht" depending on the region, while "Carnaval" seems to be the default in Latin America, Iberia, and the Francophone world.
Today's issue was tricky because I had to oscillate between "real life" and the author's fictionalized celebration.
The endless amount there is to learn and experience about Carnival (or Carnaval), even if only from afar or in books or blogs, is astonishing. I just reserved this novel and can’t wait to read it! Wishing you and yours a Happy Easter.
