I don’t think I agree with this at all. Before text they were oral traditions. One of the problems with text is that it ‘locks’ the idea down, never to be changed. Oral traditions could be updated without losing that connect. I’d warrant that the codification in the text has led to some natural fragility as we interpret the capture of oral traditions through the rigidity of text.
