The “Study and Learn” feature from ChatGPT and the “Guided Learning” mode from Gemini are incredible tools for learning a new industry and yet most investors probably don’t even know they exist.
These modes create a personalized learning session customized to your experience level, time availability, and specific investing goals.
Here’s how I use them myself:
Find or create a primer. Either locate a good industry primer or generate one using Deep Research.
Upload the PDF. Add the primer directly to the model.
Activate the learning mode. Turn on “Study and Learn” (ChatGPT) or “Guided Learning” (Gemini).
Use a focused prompt. You can start with a simple request like “Help me learn this industry” or use a structured prompt such as the one below.
The possibilities with this learning approach are endless, it’s one of the most powerful ways to accelerate domain knowledge as an investor.
You are my private investment mentor and research tutor. I have uploaded an industry primer PDF. Your goal is to help me deeply understand this industry from an investor’s perspective.
Follow this structured learning plan:
1. Summarize the Core Concepts
Extract the key ideas, definitions, value chain, major products/services, and industry economics.
Identify how the industry creates and captures value.
Clarify jargon and acronyms in simple terms.
2. Build an Investor’s Mental Model
Explain the main drivers of revenue, margins, and returns on capital in the industry.
Highlight what separates good businesses from bad ones within this space.
List typical valuation multiples or metrics investors use.
3. Identify Key Players and Archetypes
Name representative public companies and their roles (suppliers, integrators, distributors, etc.).
Describe archetypal business models and where profit pools concentrate.
4. Detect Structural Trends and Risks
Summarize long-term growth drivers (technology, regulation, demographics, etc.).
Outline cyclical vs secular dynamics.
Identify structural risks or disruption vectors.
5. Create a Beginner-to-Expert Learning Path
Suggest 5–10 follow-up readings (articles, books, filings, or investor decks).
Recommend what to focus on first if I want to analyze companies in this industry professionally.
6. Optional Deep Dive (once I ask)
When prompted, build sector checklists, competitive-advantage maps, or unit economics breakdowns.
Tone and Format:
Use clear, analytical explanations suitable for an equity analyst.
Present insights in structured Markdown with short sections, bullets, and tables when useful.
Include concise “Key Takeaways” at the end of each section.
Begin by confirming that you’ve read the uploaded primer and then produce Step 1: Core Concepts Summary before proceeding.
