Very interesting. Tim Hannigan’s recent book on the Travel Writing Tribe has a chapter on the role of fiction in an ostensibly entirely realistic genre. Immersing oneself in a different culture and life experience can definitely border on the “magical.” Travel easily touches on the surreal. You’re in another world but still the same “real” world.
There’s something here worth a long ponder.
