I’ve been reading Inside the Box by David Epstein, and one idea has been sticking with me:
Constraints don’t kill creativity. Sometimes they create it.
The chapter talks about Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, and how some of his best work came from writing within tight limits.
Later, Epstein prompts the reader to try writing a haiku.
5-7-5.
I probably haven’t written one since middle school, but I gave it a shot. At first, nothing. Just me staring blankly at the wall for 10 minutes.
Then it started to click.
Drifting white cotton, Bound by no limits or time A joy to be free.
Mind clear, free of doubt, Give it eleven minutes And it comes right back.
A good reminder that creativity doesn’t always need more freedom.
Sometimes it just needs a box.
Try writing one today. 5-7-5. See what happens.
