Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is perhaps the greatest modern critic of the idea that objectification is necessary for science.
Goethe believed mechanistic science achieves power by:
deadening phenomena,
abstracting from lived form,
severing observer from nature.
He thought this produces:
technical manipulation,
but not genuine understanding.
For Goethe:
reverence enhances perception,
participation deepens knowledge,
careful phenomenological attention reveals living form.
