I was glad to see Alastair Crooke open his latest piece by taking up my point that the United States is not simply passing through another phase of imperial decline. As I put it, “There’s no decline, it’s a crash”: not a cycle from which U.S. power naturally recovers, but an abrupt change produced by America’s own attempt to turn oil, trade, finance and technology into weapons against the rest of the world.
