First of all, it’s monstrously ugly. Liberty’s angular features anticipate the primitive, brutal neoclassicalism of Art Deco at its very worst. Were it not so iconic, it would most definitely strike us as hopelessly dated. Even the concept—a huge metal statue standing on an island in the bay—is tasteless.
Secondly, and more importantly, the Statue of Liberty represents an America that no longer exists. »
