I was struck by Huxley's certainty in beginning his novel *Eyeless in Gaza* with a quotation from Ovid: “Five words sum up every biography. 'Video meliora proboque; deteriora sequor.' Like all other human beings, I know what I ought to do, but continue to do what I know I oughtn’t to do.” I might translate it: “I see the better way, take the worse.”
