Off the coast of Ghana, in the Cor lagoon, something is happening that no engineer designed and no algorithm predicted. Microbial communities living in water saturated with synthetic textile fibres are adapting. They are developing, through the slow pressure of evolutionary necessity, a biochemical capacity to process synthetic polymers that have only existed for decades. A site of acute environmental crisis is, in a literal and biological sense, a site of evolution. Katya Dodd of the OR Foundation describes what is happening in terms that resist the language of technological optimisation: "Innovation, pragmatism and justice are inseparable when we align with the intelligence that has sustained life for billions of years."

This essay is about what that intelligence is — and what AI, for all its genuine capability in the textile waste space, structurally cannot access. It uses the Shadow Explorer framework to ask: what does an AI system see when it looks at the fashion waste problem? And what remains entirely outside its frame? The answers, I think, matter for every sector where AI is being asked to solve problems whose roots are ecological, relational, and political — not just technical.
