Knowledge and Character

In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah pairs the instrument of knowledge, the pen, with its vessel, the Prophet ﷺ.

What made the Prophet ﷺ the most ideal vessel for Revelation was his uncompromising yet compassionate character.

It is no coincidence that the reference to the Prophet ﷺ was based on his character:

{وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيم}

(And indeed, you are of a great moral character)

Knowledge and character are inseparable.

If you have been blessed with knowledge, you inherit a dual responsibility:

  • Compassion toward those who seek to be nourished by it.

  • Firmness against those who seek to poison it.

To hold knowledge is to be a guardian of the well.

If your character is closed, the thirsty cannot drink.

If your character is weak, the well becomes corrupted.
