I watched a presenter I'd worked with on a BBC show stand up at The Nibbies, the UK publishing industry's version of the Oscars, look a room full of the UK's most powerful publishers dead in the eye, and announce that everyone should go and buy his book right now.

I was equal parts horrified and impressed.
