What I’ve long believed—and I think for good reason—is that the primary benefit an MFA has on your career has to do with networking. You’ll meet a lot of authors who may recommend you to publishers/agents. People in your MFA cohort may end up working as acquisition editors at this publisher or that one.

Will that make you successful or turn you into a fulltime writer?

I mean, maybe, but it won’t be because of the MFA.

For all the hate MFAs get online, I’d be interested in seeing any data on whether or not a significant number of top-selling authors (or even people who get positive critical attention) have MFAs.
