Speaking of AI, one thing that really irks me is how normalized it's people now feel like they’ve “read” a book just by skimming summary or key insights... :(
Sure, it can be helpful. Summaries and key takeaways can be useful entry points, especially when time or energy is limited. But when that’s all you consume, something essential gets lost.
You miss the full text, the nuances, the slow buildup of ideas, the contradictions, the parts that resist simplification and refuse to fit neatly into bullet points. Bcs the most important thing from the book, from my experience, is the thinking process that leads there. And that process rarely survives compression. 🫠
Personally, I still look for reviews or summaries before reading a book, especially if it’s long or thematically heavy.
But it's more about I want to know whether the book is likely to be worth my time, or whether I’ll actually enjoy investing the time to read it properly.
