Make money doing the work you believe in
A song called "I'm so mad" (生气了) has gone viral across the Chinese internet.
It’s by comedian Papi Jiang (papi酱).
It took only 7 days from her having the idea to putting it out on social media.
With no build up or announcement…
And yet within 2 days the tune had 10 million plays and nearly 2 million likes.
It’s an entertaining journey through conversations with people who annoy her, as she experiences a…
"calm meltdown" (平静发疯).
That’s is a new internet slang which means “outwardly composed, inwardly falling apart.”
The melody is slow, intentionally cheesy, and has a "plasticky feel" (塑料感).
Which is the whole point.
As one comment put it:
“It’s such a tacky song… with such a tacky voice… but it’s so addictive!
好土的歌.. 好土的唱腔,但是好上头…..”
The song has become crazy popular.
To a point where it’s already been translated into multiple languages and brands like Luckin Coffee are imitating it for their own marketing.
So.. How has this happened?
Why has such a tack song taken off in such a big way?
We unpack this story in this week’s RealTime Mandarin! 👇
It’s a cracker!
