It's the last day of transgender awareness week, and today I want to talk about Lucy Hicks Anderson, a trans woman born in 1886 who was adamant about her identity from a young age. Based on advice from doctors, her family supported her decision to live as a woman. In 1945, she was arrested because the government said that she lied about her sex on her marriage license. She was convicted of perjury, and her story went national, causing some Time subscribers to even nominate Anderson for Time's "Man of the Year", a horrible way to attack her for her identity. Upon being released from prison, she and her husband moved to Los Angeles as she was threatened with further prosecution if she returned to Oxnard, where she had previously been living.
