Today, in my family's Black history:

My third cousin once removed, Paula Parker Means, in 1989 became the first Black woman to be named deputy mayor of Indianapolis, Ind. To date, Indianapolis has not had a Black mayor. Before her appointment by then-Mayor William H. Hudnut III, she served two terms on the City-County Council. Paula's string of "firsts" started as a teenager when she became one of the first students to integrate Northwest High School on Indianapolis' westside.
