My grandfather’s first cousin, Marianna Johnson, had a short lived career as a notable jazz recording artist who recorded with Fletcher Henderson in the early 1920s.  A contralto singer and pianist, she started out as a devotee of Marcus Garvey and performed for fundraisers that supported his cause. But in the disagreement with Harry Pace over how the Black race should advance in American society, Marianna end up with Pace Phonographic Corp. in 1921, she recorded “The Rosary/Sorter Miss You”  on Pace’s Black Swan record label, accompanied by the Black Swan Orchestra. Pace was unable to raise the capital necessary to keep the company competitive with other technologically advancing companies and went out of business in 1923. Paramount bought Black Swan’s catalog in 1924.
