So the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution has been used by Christians in the United States to scour the Holy Scriptures for biblical justification for arming oneself to the teeth with all sorts of pistols, rifles, rounds and magazines as a righteous collection of God ordained weaponry. Since Jesus is the most important figure for Christians, let us consider the passage used by second amendment advocates from Luke 22: 35-38. Jesus and His disciples are at the Last Supper and about to go to the Garden of Gethsemane where the law enforcement forces of the Sanhedrin aided by the Roman Empire will arrest Jesus. Jesus reminds them of how they did not need anything when He sent them out to preach and do miracles in His name previously. Now Jesus says “But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one.” (Lk 22: 36). For advocates of second amendment rites, that right there is Jesus giving full license to strap pistols, long guns, bump stocks and high capacity magazines on and walk into Disneyland, a proud American Christian warrior. The discerning Christian reads on to see that in verse 37 and following Jesus explains that this possession of a sword is to fulfill the Old Testament prophesy that the Messiah was counted among the wicked. AND when one of His disciples points out that they have two swords with them, Jesus does not say “Well, sell more of your cloaks and buy more swords!”, but rather “It is enough.” (Lk 22:38b)
