If we want to have decentralised organisations where people take radical accountability, we need to remember that they have spent most of their lives conditioned in centralised hierarchies.
They are like watermelons that have been grown inside square containers.
Removing the box won’t suddenly change their shape.
It will take time, unlearning, and collective practices to support people to grow the capacities needed for self-managed teams to thrive.
